Losing Your Keys, Not Your Freedom | Stay Independent Without Driving

Recent studies show that just 1 in 6 drivers in the U.S. are age 65 or older – a number that highlights a growing challenge for aging adults. As mobility becomes more limited, too many seniors face difficult choices with few safe, affordable alternatives that don’t involve giving up their independence or relocating to a care facility.

But here’s the truth: losing the ability to drive doesn’t mean losing your freedom. At Beaches Council on Aging, we’re here to shine a light on what comes next – because your lifestyle can still be full of choice, connection, and independence. Let us show you how.

You Can’t Drive Anymore, Now What?

Whether it’s due to age or a disability, there may come a time when driving is no longer an option. Maybe you’ve been relying on your sister, a neighbor, or a family member to get around. Or maybe, like many others,  you’ve stopped going out altogether, letting isolation quietly take over.

But here’s the good news: there is a solution. It may not look exactly like the independence you once had behind the wheel, but it can still give you the freedom to get out, stay social, and continue living life on your terms. You deserve to stay connected, active, and in control – and we’re here to help make that possible.

Dial-a-Ride | Your Ticket to Freedom

Dial-a-Ride is a transportation service proudly provided by the Beaches Council on Aging, designed to support seniors from Mayport to Ponte Vedra Beach. This free service helps you get where you need to go – whether it’s a doctor’s appointment, hair salon, grocery store, visit with a friend, or the local farmer’s market. Your destination matters, and Dial-a-Ride makes sure you get there safely and comfortably.

We’ll pick you up right at your home and bring you back when you’re done – no hassle, no stress. The service also accommodates wheelchair users, ensuring accessibility for all. While Dial-a-Ride is free of charge, a $5 donation is always appreciated and helps keep the program running strong. More than just transportation, Dial-a-Ride provides freedom, connection, and independence – the things that matter most.

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, older adults who stop driving are nearly twice as likely to experience depression and nearly five times more likely to enter long-term care facilities. That’s why our mission is so important. At Beaches Council on Aging, we believe that just because you’ve stopped driving doesn’t mean you should stop living fully. Stay social. Visit friends. Go out to dinner. Live life.
And let us help you get there.

It’s Your Life | Continue to Live it

We understand how challenging it can be to lose the ability to drive – whether it’s due to age, injury, disability, or mental health concerns. You still have places to go, people to meet, and experiences to enjoy – and Dial-a-Ride is here to help make that happen.
